Rotary Club of Dwight History

In 1938 the Rotary Club of Dwight was organized and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Streator.  The club number 4717 was derived by the two state routes that pass through Dwight.  The first officers elected were President, Laurie L. Stitzer; Vice President, Lloyd W. Bush; and Secretary-Treasurer, Dr. S. E. Graham.  The Club received its charter at a meeting held September 21, 1938 at the Dwight High School gymnasium.  Dave Walker, Governor of the 147th District, presented the charter.  About 300 Rotarians from 20 towns in the Dwight area participated in this meeting.

Dwight Rotary Club is a service organization.  Rotary began as an idea more than 100 years ago. Four businessmen searching for fellowship and a way to give back to their community began this organization which today flourishes worldwide with 1.2 million members in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

Internationally the Rotary Club is responsible for the eradication of polio in the world and helping third world countries create sanitary drinking water, solar ovens for villages to bake bread without depleting their country's forests, and providing medical and dental care to areas that does not have those types of services.
